Kuster Urges Supreme Court to Rule in Favor of Marriage Equality

Statement

Date: April 28, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

This morning, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement regarding the start of opening arguments in the Supreme Court on marriage equality cases in Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky:

"In America, every citizen has an inalienable right to equal protection under the law, and no one should be discriminated against simply because of whom they love. Today, the Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments on four cases that will help determine whether same-sex couples will be treated fairly in the eyes of the law. It's time to uphold our American ideals for every citizen, and repeal discriminatory policies that prohibit some of our fellow country-men and women from accessing one of their rights as citizens of this country -- the right to marry. I urge the Supreme Court to rule on the side of justice and equality for all, so we can ensure that every American, regardless of their sexual orientation, has that same legal right in every state across the country."

The four state cases currently pending before the Supreme Court (Obergefell v. Hodges, Tanco v. Haslam, DeBoer v. Snyder, and Bourke v. Beshear, which will be heard and decided together as one, will determine the right of individual states to regulate marriage. Last month, Congresswoman Kuster joined with over 200 of her colleagues in Congress to submit an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to rule in favor of equal protection in the eyes of the law. A strong advocate for equal rights, Kuster also signed a similar amicus brief to the Supreme Court in 2012 advocating for the Court to overturn the prejudicial Defense of Marriage Act, thereby forcing the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages as legal. Kuster is a member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, an organization dedicated to promoting equal protection under the law for LGBT Americans.
